6 Critical Factors:

Location, Location, Location!
Your information is only as safe as the facility it is stored in. Make sure your provider has fail safe power, Internet, and hardware redundancies. Do NOT take the providers’ word for the description of their facilities. Have them PROVE IT! Unfortunately, believe it or not, there are companies on the internet that are less than scrupulous when it comes to providing accurate descriptions of their facilities.

At Computer Storage Services our data center is in a secure, low profile underground bunker-like facility. Your data is under 24 Hour / 7 day a week, manned security, with state-of-the-art sensor detection and camera monitoring. Our data center is kept cool by N+1 air conditioning units. Grid power is supplied by two transformer stations, virtually eliminating risk of power outage. UPS backup is powered by multiple diesel/natural gas generators. A dry-pipe Sapphire Suppression System uses clean extinguishers to eliminate risks associated with water based suppression methods. The 100 per cent fibre optic network has multiple independent internet feeds ensure 99.9999 % uptime.

Test, Test, and Test Again.
Any backup system be it tape, disk to disk, or offsite storage should be tested on a regular basis!  If you do not have the resources to do this yourself make sure your backup provider can provide this service for you.

Large file recovery tests are important because in most cases really large data restores cannot be done over the internet. Make sure your backup company provides an onsite backup storage appliance and has the ability to provide you with your data on a drive in case of onsite failure. 80% of companies that do large file restores for the first time discover serious issues and or backup failures.

Show Me the Money.

Baremetal restore, hardware independent, de-dupilication, and agentless architecture are important features but not necessary for most companies.  If you don’t need these capabilities do not pay for them.

More Money, Honey.
Online live 100% information access is not necessary for most companies especially if a onsite storage device is incorporated into the backup strategy.  Make sure your backup company can provide archival offsite storage with next day retrieval at a lower cost point.

Service, Service, Service!

Checking email notifications are usually the responsibilities of the client,  however many companies do not have the resources to consistently do the monitoring required.  Make sure you deal with a backup company that can provide these services.

This may be the most important thing to remember…

If you have a problem can you contact a LIVE person?
Make sure that your backup service provider has phone number
with a live body attached to it, and not a person in a third world country.  If you do have a problem you can make sure it is being addressed as fast as humanly possible.  There is nothing more frustrating than to get an automated email response when you have an issue that needs to be resolved.
